PROPOSED "good behaviour licences" for those caught low- to mid-range drink driving would address community concerns about allowing those motorists back behind the wheel, NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell says.
The recommendation from the NSW Sentencing Council for a new system has won the support of the state government.
Under existing laws, magistrates often opt not to record a conviction against drivers caught just above the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.05 per cent, instead issuing them with a Section 10 order.
That means drink-drivers retain their full licence, without losing demerit points.
The council wants magistrates to have the option of recording a conviction against the driver, and of placing them on a bond for six months for a low-range first offence, and 12 months for a mid-range first offence.
Drivers will get to keep their licence but would lose it if caught drink driving while on the good behaviour bond.
